Allow Ducks as Pets in Bethel Park, PA

Allow Ducks as Pets in Bethel Park, PA
The Issue
In July 2025, I received a violation notice stating that I was in violation of Bethel Park's code for owning ducks. Upon raising this issue with David Rudolph and Kristen Denne, I pointed out that ducks are not gallinaceous fowl and should, therefore, be permitted as pets. They assured me they would consult with the solicitor and revert. However, two months later, I received another violation letter alongside a rapidly amended code, now demanding I relinquish my beloved pets within three days. It seems this amendment was added specifically to target me.
Ducks, like dogs and cats, can be endearing companions that bring joy and life to a household. These gentle creatures are low-maintenance and can be a wonderful learning experience for families, teaching children about responsibility and nature conservation. Moreover, they pose no greater risk to community welfare than other domestic pets.
Across the United States, many towns recognize ducks as suitable pets and have adjusted their codes accordingly. Cities such as Portland, Oregon and Saint Paul, Minnesota have thriving communities where ducks live harmoniously as part of the household. It's time for Bethel Park to align with these progressive communities and embrace diversity in pet ownership.
We urge the Bethel Park council to reconsider this rigid stance and restore residents’ right to choose ducks as personal pets. With your signature, we can demonstrate the community’s support in allowing ducks to be kept responsibly as pets in Bethel Park. Let’s foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for all pet owners and their feathered friends.
Please sign this petition to show our elected officials that the people of Bethel Park support the freedom to raise ducks as pets. Together, we can make a change!
