The Issue

Our dog, Sooty, is now 10 and loves to explore our beautiful country with us.  He's been on trains and buses since we first rescued him aged 1. He's been on the London Underground, Liverpool's Merseyrail, Newcastle's Metrolink, trams in Sheffield, Manchester and Croydon. But in in his home city?

Nottingham is a city that prides itself on being progressive and inclusive.  The city is packed with dog-friendly pubs, cafés and restaurants. The tram system is efficient, practical and a great option for travel in and around the city.  This is from the NET website: "The tram is vital in supporting mobility and stimulating business across Nottingham as one of the UK's fastest growing economies, a major tourist destination, and one of the UK's leading student hubs." So why are dogs not allowed on board? Dogs are an integral part of many people's lives, offering companionship, enhancing physical activity, and contributing positively to mental health. Allowing dogs on trams would make a significant difference to the lives of many residents without incurring heavy costs or logistical challenges for the city.

Currently, dogs are allowed on buses and trains and it makes no sense that they can't travel on trams which are more open plan. Perhaps a certain area of the tram could be dog friendly or we could consider off peak times only? Cities like Manchester and Sheffield have successfully implemented policies allowing dogs on trams with minimal issues. They are shining examples of modern urban planning that accommodates the needs of pet owners while simultaneously promoting pet-friendly community values.

According to a study conducted by Harvard University, dog owners are 69% more likely to participate in physical activity than those without dogs. By allowing dogs on Nottingham's tram network, we would be taking a step forward in promoting healthy and active lifestyles. Furthermore, inclusive policies such as this encourage a more vibrant and social community atmosphere, aligning with Nottingham’s values of diversity and inclusion.

It's crucial that we advocate for a compassionate and modern transport system that reflects the values of our community. Help us make Nottingham a more inclusive city where everyone, including our furry friends, can enjoy the benefits of public transport.

Please sign this petition to allow dogs on trams in Nottingham and lead the way for a more dog-friendly future in urban transport.
