Allow Dogs on the Beaches in Sarnia

Allow Dogs on the Beaches in Sarnia

The Issue

The beach is my happy place, and my dog is my best friend. Why can’t the two mix? In many cities across Canada, dog-friendly beaches are a common amenity that brings joy to both pet owners and their furry companions. Allowing dogs on Sarnia's beaches would promote responsible pet ownership, healthy lifestyle and outdoor community activity.  If promoted, could boost also tourism!

I think the people of Sarnia should be allowed to walk their dogs leashed on all public beaches, just as they would in parks and and streets. I also think an off-leash area, that is well marked with specific hours if needed, should be allowed. What dog doesn't love a game of frisbee in the lake!

Giving my dog her best dog life brings me joy, and I bet all dog owners would tell you the same thing! Studies have shown that spending time with pets can reduce stress and improve mental health (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). By designating specific areas or times for dogs on the beach, we can ensure a clean, safe environment for everyone.

Being a responsible dog owner include socialization, training, cleaning up after your pet, making sure their up to date on their shots, providing an appropriate diet, and of course exercise.

Last year residents of the community of Saugeen Shores, also on lake Huron changed their their bylaws to allow dogs on their beaches.

The approved areas, in Southampton and Port Elgin, received the most support in each community.

The areas include, Saugeen River to the High Street Flagpole. From July 1 to Oct. 1, owners can exercise their dogs at any time of the day. In Port Elgin, 538 Izzard Road to Concession 6/Bruce Road 25, owners can take their dogs between 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. from July 1 to Oct. 1, owners can exercise their dogs between 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.
