The Issue

I am writing this petition to address a pressing issue that affects not only me but also numerous families across the state of Virginia. My husband is currently incarcerated, and like many others, we are deprived of the opportunity to maintain a healthy relationship due to the absence of conjugal visits. I strongly believe that allowing conjugal visits in Virginia prisons would greatly benefit both inmates and their loved ones.

Conjugal visits, also known as extended family visits or private family visits, are supervised periods of time during which inmates can spend quality time with their spouses or partners in a private setting. These visits provide an essential opportunity for physical intimacy and emotional connection between incarcerated individuals and their loved ones.

Research has shown that conjugal visitation programs have several positive effects on prisoners' behavior and overall well-being. Studies conducted in other states where these programs exist have demonstrated reduced rates of violence within prisons, improved inmate mental health, increased chances for successful reintegration into society upon release, and strengthened family bonds.

For instance, California implemented conjugal visitation programs back in 1957. A study conducted by Dr. Mark Fleisher at California State University found that these programs significantly reduced sexual misconduct among inmates by providing them with legal outlets for sexual expression within committed relationships.

Furthermore, research from various sources indicates that maintaining strong family ties during incarceration reduces recidivism rates. According to a report published by the Minnesota Department of Corrections in 2011, prisoners who had regular contact with their families were 13% less likely to be rearrested compared to those who did not receive such support.

By allowing conjugal visits in Virginia prisons, we can foster healthier relationships between inmates and their partners/spouses while promoting safer prison environments for both staff members and prisoners themselves. This change would contribute positively towards reducing recidivism rates among released individuals as they reintegrate into society.

I urge the Virginia Department of Corrections and state legislators to seriously consider implementing conjugal visitation programs in our state. By doing so, we can provide incarcerated individuals with a chance to maintain their family bonds, improve their mental well-being, and increase their chances of successful reintegration into society upon release.

Let us come together as concerned citizens and advocate for this important change in our prison system. Sign this petition to show your support for allowing conjugal visits in Virginia prisons and help bring positive change to the lives of countless families affected by incarceration within our state.

Thank you for your support!
