On September 26, a student at Avon Lake High School was pulled out of class for a school violence joke made in a private group chat with friends. After multiple investigations conducted by local police, the comments were deemed a joke. As dark humor emerges as a central theme in generation z, it is crucial to differentiate jokes from credible threats. The school notified parents of the situation however, they used the word “credible”. This word choice not only installed fear in the community but also caused an uproar throughout Avon Lake. The student was punished with a two week suspension. Although it is reasonable to investigate comments and to install disciplinary actions,  the extent of punishment to this student must be questioned. The student is now facing expulsion until the second semester and a permanent mark on their record. This punishment seems unjust and not fitting. A distasteful joke has now permanently altered the students future, academics and relationships among peers. This situation has resulted in an important life lesson for the student and should not impact their bright future. Sign this petition to show support for the cause.
