Allow class pets in Old Saybrook Schools

Allow class pets in Old Saybrook Schools
The Issue
Recently, a second grade teacher at our school was fortunate enough to receive a grant that enabled them to introduce a bearded dragon as a class pet. This was not just any pet; it became a cornerstone in supporting educational activities and serving as an emotional support animal for students with emotional needs. The presence of this gentle creature brought unexpected benefits, fostering a nurturing environment for learning and personal growth.
Class pets can enhance the learning experience in numerous ways. They provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn about biology, responsibility, and animal care. More importantly, they offer companionship and emotional relief, especially for students dealing with stress or emotional challenges. Research supports the benefits of having animals in educational settings, showing decreased anxiety levels and increased student engagement.
Unfortunately, the current "stance" in the Old Saybrook School System restrict the ability of teachers to have class pets. We believe that the position of the administration should be revised to allow teachers the discretion to introduce appropriate class pets that can serve educational and emotional functions. The introduction of class pets, like our bearded dragon and hermit crab, has proven to be incredibly beneficial and should be extended as an option for other classrooms across the district.
We propose that clear guidelines and protocols be established to ensure both the welfare of the animals and the educational goals of the school system. This includes selecting species that are suitable for a classroom environment, ensuring proper care and maintenance, and identifying the roles these animals will play in supporting educational and emotional objectives.
We urge the Old Saybrook School System to reconsider its stance and allow class pets, providing the kind of enriched learning environment that has already benefited so many students. By signing this petition, you can show your support for making classrooms in Old Saybrook not only centers of academic excellence but also nurturing environments for emotional growth and well-being.
