King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan, also known as The Dragon King, led prayers for our late Queen just a day after her passing. It was a moment of cross-cultural compassion that moved many of us profoundly.
In the wake of this profound gesture, I formed a unique friendship with a Bhutanese gentleman named Choki. It is Choki who was a beacon of strength and support during my cancer treatment. His unwavering encouragement and constant communication were instrumental in my recovery. Our friendship deepened to the extent that we climbed the Himalayas together in Spring 2026, fulfilling a dream that I once thought impossible.
Now, it is my deepest wish for Choki to visit me in the UK. Despite my numerous visits to Bhutan—which have allowed me to experience its rich traditions and hospitality—Choki has been prevented from reciprocating even for a simple holiday visit, like joining me for Christmas celebrations. This exclusion has continued for over four years and has been heart-wrenching for both of us.
At the age of 70, having triumphed over cancer, I find that time is a precious commodity. Being able to host Choki in the UK and show him the beauty and richness of our culture isn't just a personal aspiration; it's an essential closure to a cherished friendship that stands testament to the values of empathy and global connectivity.
I urge the relevant authorities to reconsider their stance and grant Choki the opportunity to visit the UK.
