In my local area of Hinckley and Bosworth, a troubling decision by the council threatens the simplest joy of childhood: playing outside. Recently, the council has classified any children playing out on the street as 'anti-social behavior' and has informed residents in council housing that such activities may count as a strike against their tenancy. This decision has come after complaints from just two individuals who were displeased with hearing the sound of children enjoying their six-week holiday break.

Growing up, street play was an integral part of childhood for many, fostering a sense of community, independence, and providing a safe space for exercise and socialization. The council's policy now threatens to curtail this fundamental aspect of growing up, labeling it as misconduct and applying pressure on families who reside in council-owned properties.

The implications of this policy reach beyond mere play. It fosters an environment where children are discouraged from social interaction, exercise, and community engagement. Furthermore, it adds stress to parents who are being unjustly penalized for allowing their children to safely enjoy time outdoors. Research consistently highlights the benefits of outdoor play, noting its positive effects on children's physical health, mental wellbeing, and social development.

Despite complaints from a minority, there is no substantial evidence to suggest that children playing in their own neighborhoods pose any significant risk or disturbance. On the contrary, a vibrant community where children can play openly is often a sign of a healthy, thriving neighborhood.

We propose that rather than penalizing natural and harmless childhood activities, the council understands that times have changed and the local parks have become more dangerous with crime increases in the last few years as well as the parks being constantly vandalised and anti-social behaviour being common there. Parents and children do not feel safe and penalising parents and kids for having a safe space where they live will actually force children and parents into more dangerous areas as a result. 

Anti-social behaviour has increased from the years when kids could go to the park with their friends Now we face less police patrols, less safety with crime over recent years on the rise and now we have foreign men from other countries on our streets from countries where women and children are shown little to no respect.  Women and children do not feel safe and it is Hinckley and Bosworth Council's job to recognise the area where you live should be more than a bed but a safe haven from these troubling times.   

We urge the Hinckley and Bosworth council to reconsider their stance. Let us work together to find solutions that promote a harmonious community life where children can safely, happily, and freely play in the neighborhoods they call home.
