The Issue

Growing up, I have always cherished the idea of having small animals in our backyard, embracing the spirit of a simple, self-sustaining lifestyle. The joy of collecting fresh eggs every morning, teaching children about where our food comes from, and responsibly caring for animals is something I believe every family should have the opportunity to experience. This simple pleasure of backyard farming creates lasting family memories and enriches our local community spirit.

In New Martinsville, WV, the current regulations prevent residents from keeping chickens within city limits. This outdated restriction not only deprives families of the chance to engage in a sustainable lifestyle but also offers no tangible benefit to the community’s well-being. According to a study by the USDA, urban areas that allow residents to keep a few hens have reported enhancements in community relationships and significant educational benefits for children who learn about agriculture firsthand.

Moreover, backyard chickens are a valuable source of fresh, organic eggs, helping families reduce their grocery bills and their reliance on industrial farming practices. The environmental impact is minimal, as small flocks of chickens produce negligible waste and are generally quieter than household pets such as dogs.

Cities across the United States, including nearby Wheeling, WV, have successfully integrated backyard chickens into their urban environment with simple yet effective regulations. These include limiting the number of hens, prohibiting roosters, and implementing community guidelines on coop maintenance. New Martinsville can easily adopt similar guidelines that ensure neighbors' concerns are addressed while giving families the opportunity to raise chickens responsibly.

Let’s modernize our town's laws to reflect a growing trend toward sustainable living. By allowing chickens within city limits, New Martinsville can support family bonding, educational growth, and community resilience. I urge the city council to amend this ordinance. Please sign this petition to help bring a positive change to our community.

We could adopt similar rules and regulations as moundsville, wheeling and other cities. This could also lead to permits for a fee, that could support the local animal shelter, much like our dog taxes and tags. There is talks at the state level to allow it, Let's add more growth to our community. Let's open our view of this wonderful city into something more! Thank you for your support and consideration with this.
