The Issue

Living in a beautiful town like Memphis, Missouri, I appreciate the community spirit and the ability for families to thrive together. For my family, keeping chickens is a longstanding tradition that has provided us with fresh eggs daily, almost ensuring at least one or two nutritious and free meals every day. This not only supports our family financially, but it also fosters a sustainable way of living that's in harmony with nature.

Unfortunately, current regulations prohibit the keeping of chickens within the city limits of Memphis. This prevents us, and many others in our town, from enjoying this simple yet impactful practice. Chickens are not just a source of food, they serve educational purposes, teaching children about responsibility, agriculture, and the origins of their food. Furthermore, with rising costs of living, allowing backyard chickens would enable families to cut down on grocery expenses, which could be a financial relief for many.

Chickens are relatively low-maintenance animals, and with responsible ownership, concerns such as noise and cleanliness can easily be addressed. For instance, city councils in places like Austin, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois have succeeded in integrating urban farming practices by setting up guidelines that regulate how many chickens can be kept, and ensuring that coops meet specific health and safety standards.

We urge the Memphis City Council to reconsider the current ordinance and allow families the opportunity to maintain chickens in their backyards. By establishing practical guidelines for the keeping of chickens, Memphis can lead by example, showing how modern towns can support self-sustainability and healthier lifestyle choices.

Sign this petition to bring about change in Memphis, MO, and help families like mine continue our traditions, support self-sufficiency, and bring about a more sustainable future.
