Allow Chicken Ownership in Our Township
The Issue
As a North Middleton township resident who loves my chickens, this issue is deeply personal to me. We've raised eight chicks to maturation, awaiting eagerly their first eggs. We provide their eggs to several families in the area and don't take them for granted. We are dedicated pet owners - we provide organic feed, fruit and veggie treats, and even let our ladies free range and play every day. To our toddler, these chickens are not just animals, they have become an essential part of his routine. "Bok bok" is now a symbol of morning and night, letting them out of the coop and closing it . Regrettably, our township still does not allow us to legally own these animals that have become integral to our lives.
Between Carlisle Borough (downtown) and Middlesex Township, our township is the only one that doesn't allow the ownership of chickens, despite our land stretching over 1.58 acres. It seems absurd when even the urbanized areas allow for it. Yet because of it, we've already had to experience the heartbreaking event of re-homing our beloved goats.
We know we're not alone in this predicament as many other families in our township own chickens, and face, like us, the risk of being forced to part with their animals. We propose an amendment to the current ordinance to permit chicken ownership in our township. Having an abundance of land while having no liberty to use it seems unnecessary and unjust. Let's not ignore the benefit of chicken ownership - they are great pets, natural insect control, and fresh egg suppliers. Let's change that for the betterment of our community. We hope and insist, for the sake of our cherished chickens, our harmonious life, and the fairness of all township residents, to allow for chicken ownership in our township. Please, sign our petition.
