The Issue

High school graduation is a major milestone that reflects the hard work and dedication we have put into our education over the past 12 years. At Rio Rancho High School, the graduation ceremony is meant to celebrate our accomplishments and mark the end of an important chapter in our lives. However, the current rule prohibiting graduation cap decorations limits students’ ability to express themselves during what should be a meaningful and personal moment.
For many students, graduation represents more than just a ceremony it marks the transition into adulthood and the beginning of a new stage in life. Decorating graduation caps allows students to represent their individuality, future goals, cultural backgrounds, or personal experiences that shaped their high school journey. For students who may not receive cords, medals or other recognitions, a decorated cap can also be a way to celebrate their achievements and identity.
Many schools across the country already allow graduation cap decorations with clear guidelines to ensure that designs remain respectful and appropriate for the ceremony. These policies allow students to express themselves while still maintaining the dignity and formality of the event. Adopting a similar policy at Rio Rancho High School would allow students to celebrate their individuality without disrupting the ceremony.
Another important reason students should have the freedom to decorate their caps is that the caps and gowns are purchased by students or their families with their own money as a requirement for graduation. Because students pay for these items themselves and take them home afterwards, they do not belong to the school after the fact. Allowing decorations would simply give students the opportunity to personalize something they already own while celebrating an achievement they worked hard to earn.
We encourage the administration of Rio Rancho High School to consider allowing graduation cap decorations with reasonable guidelines, such as prohibiting offensive language or imagery. Graduation should be a celebration of each student’s journey, and allowing decorated caps would help make the ceremony more personal and meaningful for the graduating class of 2026 and beyond.
