The Issue

Nursing students at Bowie State University are currently faced with a significant challenge that impacts their educational experience and future careers: the inability to pick clinical schedules. This restriction not only limits their learning opportunities but can also affect many students on a more personal level. Many students have major responsibilities outside of school that impact their daily schedules and availability. Some students are parents who must plan around childcare, while others work to support themselves, pay tuition, pay rent, or help their families financially. A few even balance multiple jobs or caregiving roles on top of their coursework and clinical requirements. Because of these real-life responsibilities, having the ability to choose our clinical section from the available options is not just a matter of preference's a matter of survival for many of us. Allowing students to select a section that fits their individual circumstances ensures we can continue showing up fully for both our education and our personal lives without being forced to choose between our education and our responsibilities. In many students' cases, it's not realistic to tell students to not work while in the program.

Clinical rotations are a critical component of nursing education, providing hands-on experience and exposure to different specialties within the field. However, when students are unable to select rotations that align with their schedules/preferences, it can create unnecessary stress and hinder their studies. Many leading nursing programs across the country offer students the flexibility to choose their clinical placements, recognizing the benefits it brings in terms of student motivation and educational outcomes. We urge the administration of Bowie State University to review and revise their policies regarding clinical placement selection for nursing students. By doing so, the university will demonstrate its commitment to providing high-quality education and support to its students, preparing them for successful and fulfilling careers in nursing.

Please sign this petition to support Bowie State nursing students in gaining the right to choose their clinical rotations, ensuring their educational experiences align with their goals and aspirations. Your signature will help bring about much-needed change for these future healthcare providers.
