The Issue

In Park City, UT, I've always had a passion for riding my bike. Unfortunately, the local skatepark doesn’t allow dirt jumpers, BMX bikes, or trick scooters, which limits opportunities for those of us who don’t skate. I experience firsthand how this restriction impacts bikers like me, who thrive on the different opportunities and lines that only a skatepark can offer, compared to a traditional dirt jump park like Creekside Bike Park. On the other hand, scooters have nowhere else to ride other than Woodward, which is expensive and out of the way.

Park City prides itself on being an inclusive and outdoor-friendly community, yet this restriction excludes a segment of action sports enthusiasts. Allowing bikes and scooters in the skatepark would not only diversify the park's use but also foster a more inclusive environment where bikes, scooters, and skaters can coexist and learn from each other.

Other cities in the U.S. have already embraced this change with great success. Cities like Portland, OR, and Santa Cruz, CA, have thriving skateparks where skaters, scooters, and bikers have learned to share the space respectfully. These cities have shown that with proper signage, designated rules, and shared space agreements, conflicts can be minimized, leading to a harmonious and diverse park atmosphere.

Bikes and scooters are more controlled and more easily stopped than skateboards, and I believe that the three communities can enjoy the facility together.

I urge the Park City Council and local authorities to consider this proposal and take action to allow dirt jumpers, scooters, and BMX bikes in the skatepark. By signing this petition, you're supporting a more inclusive and diverse recreational space for everyone in Park City. If this idea gets approved, there would be no more complaints about bikers/scooters illegally using the skatepark, and no more altercations between citizens or law enforcement. Join me in this mission to make our skatepark a place for all riders!
