Allow benefit splitting for co-parents
Allow benefit splitting for co-parents
The Issue
As a parent who eagerly spends time with my children, I find myself in a challenging financial position. My children stay with me for 60 hours each week, which naturally incurs various expenses. However, despite sharing custody nearly equally with their other parent, I am unable to claim any financial support. This situation makes it difficult for me to balance the joy of being with my children and the need to work full-time to support us.
This issue extends beyond just my family. Many co-parents who choose to share custody of their children equally are at a significant disadvantage under the current benefits system. Presently, only one parent can claim child benefits and universal credit, creating an inequitable situation for the other parent who also bears the same financial responsibilities.
Child benefit and universal credit should reflect the modern realities of co-parenting. A more fair system would allow benefits to be divided between parents based on the time each spends caring for their children. This division could be established through a mutually agreed-upon childcare share agreement or by a court order when necessary.
The introduction of benefit splitting could relieve financial strain on many hardworking co-parents, ensuring that both parents can provide the best for their children without being financially crippled.
I urge policymakers to consider this change, as it acknowledges the shifting dynamics of parenting in today's society. Please sign this petition to call for a fair and equitable distribution of benefits among co-parents. Your support can make a real difference for families like mine and countless others who strive each day to be present in their children's lives.
