The Issue

Living in Avalon Park, Wesley Chapel, my family and I, along with many other residents, are deeply connected to the idea of sustainability and self-sufficiency. In our current economic climate, where food prices are soaring and uncertainties abound, having the ability to produce our own food is more crucial than ever. For us, and many others in our neighborhood, this means turning to backyard chickens.

Backyard chickens can be a reliable source of fresh eggs daily for families who, like ours, consume a lot of them. They offer an eco-friendly and economical option for food production, not to mention they also provide natural pest control and fertilizer for gardens. However, despite these benefits, Avalon Park residents are currently restricted by Homeowners' Association (HOA) rules that prohibit keeping chickens.

We propose a change in the HOA policies across Wesley Chapel that would permit residents to keep a regulated number of hens, specifically prohibiting roosters to avoid noise disturbances, for the purpose of egg production. This policy change can be made with clear guidelines to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness, mitigating potential concerns about smell or noise.

Numerous cities across the United States have successfully integrated backyard chicken-keeping into residential areas, allowing families to experience the benefits without compromising neighborhood harmony. Success stories from other areas illustrate that with the right management practices, backyard chickens can coexist peacefully in residential communities, benefiting families and enhancing community resilience.

Allowing backyard chickens in Avalon Park would not only help families become more self-sufficient, but it also aligns with broader sustainability efforts. It's about taking a proactive step towards food security in our community, empowering residents to take more control over their food supply.

We urge the HOA Boards within Wesley Chapel Avalon Park to consider our petition and support this initiative that promotes a real solution for families facing economic pressure. Your signature can make a difference in advocating for this necessary change. Please sign and support the movement to allow backyard chickens in our neighborhoods, leading us toward a sustainable future.
