Why this petition matters

Started by Angela Eck

Currently, the ordinances for the town of New Whiteland, IN prohibit chickens and other poultry from being owned and raised within town limits. I would like to petition the Town Council to change this, in order to allow each household to own and raise a small flock of hens or other female poultry, such as ducks and turkeys.

Many other towns and cities within Indiana and throughout other states allow backyard chickens and other types of poultry. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Bloomington, Evansville, Fishers, South Bend, and Terre Haute allow them. Many other small towns do, too.

There are many benefits to allowing backyard poultry ownership within town limits. First, it allows people to raise a sustainable and healthy local food source in an affordable way, during a time that record high inflation has driven up food costs. This could be incredibly helpful for those struggling with food insecurity. Second, it allows local kids living in town to participate in agricultural learning, such as raising chickens or other poultry for 4H. Third, it increases happiness and well-being of the town's citizens by offering a meaningful, productive, and fun hobby.

Please join me in signing this petition to request that the Town Council for the town of New Whiteland, IN, change our ordinances to allow small flocks of backyard poultry, and make our town a more sustainable, self-sufficient, and joyful place to live. Thank you for your help and support!
