Allow backyard chickens in Barrow County Georgia

The Issue

Georgia is the "Poultry Capital of the World." Barrow County is filled with agricultural businesses - especially chicken farms and a huge poultry plant in Bethlehem. Yet lawmakers decided that residents must own five acres of land in order to own chickens. With the recent rise in self-sustaining practices all across the country, raising chickens in and out of the city has been extremely fun and beneficial for families. Even large cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Atlanta allow backyard chickens.
Chicken owners in Barrow County have been cited on this new regulation, and have been told to get rid of our pet chickens within 30 days. Well we won't do so without a fight. Did you know that Georgia HB 529 requires local governments to not restrict property owners from owning chickens? And there is another state bill on the way that furthers the legalization of owning chickens? What we are asking is that you sign our petition to get the attention of our local leaders. We want the ban on chickens overturned, and in its place a law stating reasonable limits on the number of chickens allowed in residential areas, and to keep chicken-owning practices safe and reasonable.
Please share this petition with your friends and neighbors, and feel free to write letters and emails supporting the owning of pet chickens in Barrow County Georgia!
