In recent years, Australia has witnessed an alarming increase in violence against women. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 45 women have been killed at the hands of men in the last year alone, while hundreds more have suffered sexual and physical assault. Sadly, these statistics do not capture the numerous instances where women live in constant fear, unable to feel safe in their own homes or while walking on the street.

This petition is deeply personal for countless women across Australia who have experienced or fear such violence. Every woman deserves the inalienable right to protect herself from harm in daily life. Unfortunately, the current legal framework around self-defense options is insufficient. The law must be reformed to provide women with accessible, legal options for personal protection.

One pragmatic solution is to allow the lawful carrying of approved, non-lethal personal defense sprays, such as pepper spray. Such measures have been successfully and safely implemented in many other democratic countries around the world, providing women with more security, peace of mind, and a way to defend themselves against potential attackers.

We recognize concerns about the misuse of personal defense sprays. Therefore, we propose regulatory safeguards, including thorough background checks and mandatory training sessions for anyone who wishes to carry such a spray. This approach ensures that the sprays are used responsibly and for their intended purpose: the protection of women in imminent danger.

This petition appeals to the Australian Parliament, state and territory governments, Attorneys-General, and relevant Ministers to amend the weapons laws to reflect the urgent necessity for women’s self-defense mechanisms. We must prioritize women's safety and give them the tools to defend themselves in a society where threats are all too real.
