From what some of the old boys have heard, many old boys and current students are unsatisfied with our current school uniform offering. By signing this petition you are expressing your interest in changing the current uniform policy and include long trousers as an option for all students at Auckland Grammar School for daily wear.

We understand that long trousers are only available to prefects to be worn by them on formal occasions only. It is noted that there has been no significant change to our uniform listing and no major uniform review process over many years. However, times have changed and the notion that boys wear short trousers no longer exists. All other secondary schools in New Zealand have long trousers available as an option as of 2025. 

We believe that being prohibited from wearing long trousers at school is unreasonable for a number of valid arguments: Long trousers are much more effective in keeping students warm during winter months, and keeping students warm under rainy and windy weather conditions; To provide students at Auckland Grammar with sense of equality given that all the secondary schools in Auckland offer long trousers to young men; Many students find it uncomfortable or even self-conscious in short trousers uniforms due to their age and/or their body/height. Providing long trousers as an option for all boys will help them build their confidence and prevent potential mental illness; Shorts trousers are usually part of the uniforms for boys at primary schools. Given that our school is a Year 9-13 (13-18 years) school, we should provide all of our students with long trousers as an option for daily wear.
