I have always had a deep passion for economics, fueled by my desire to understand how the world functions financially. As a student at El Cerrito High School, I was eager to enroll in both AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics to further my education and prepare myself for future opportunities. Unfortunately, despite having a teacher who is enthusiastic about teaching these subjects, the school district has refused to offer these courses. The reason? They are concerned about the need to allocate resources for another AP Government teacher.

This decision is incredibly disheartening for students like myself, who are committed to excelling in economics and wish to challenge ourselves academically. Our school district should be prioritizing the educational growth and choices of its students by providing the courses that can have a significant impact on our futures. Offering AP Economics would not only benefit current students by allowing them to take the AP exam within their school environment but also enhance El Cerrito High School's curriculum, preparing students for college and beyond.

AP Economics courses are known to offer valuable insights into economic trends, critical thinking, and analytical skills that can have a profound influence on students’ career paths. According to the College Board, students who take AP courses and exams engage in deeper learning and are more likely to succeed in college. By ignoring our requests to include these courses, the district is holding us back from achieving our academic potential.

The solution seems straightforward. The district can explore hiring or reallocating staff to accommodate both the AP Economics and AP Government courses. This not only ensures that students have a broad academic choice but supports teachers who are eager and qualified to teach these important subjects. A little restructuring can go a long way in enhancing student experiences and performance.

I urge the school district to reconsider its decision and find a way to offer AP Macroeconomics and Microeconomics at El Cerrito High School. Until then, students like myself are left seeking options outside our school system, which is neither convenient nor fair.
