The Issue
My peers and I have poured our hearts and souls into the AP Capstone program at the Collier County School District over the past two years. We've undertaken rigorous coursework, participated in extensive research, and improved our presentation and writing skills. This wasn't easy, but we were driven by the promise of growth and accomplishment, learning beyond our standard curriculum.
The AP Capstone program is designed to prepare students like us for success in college and career by equipping us with critical thinking, research, and communication skills. We've met every challenge, pushed our limits, and been unwavering in our dedication. Yet, our achievements risk going unnoticed at a crucial milestone: our high school graduation.
Traditionally, students who complete the AP Capstone program proudly wear the AP Capstone stole during the graduation ceremony. It is a symbol not just of academic excellence but of enduring hard work and commitment. Unfortunately, this year, due to the timing of AP score releases, which are provided in July after graduation, our class is being denied this honor.
We are being penalized for something we cannot control. This decision is not just unfair, but it undermines our efforts and downplays the significance of the program. Allowing us to wear the stole would be a powerful recognition of our accomplishments and would inspire the classes that follow us.
To solve this, the Collier County School District can implement a policy that permits AP Capstone candidates to wear their stoles at graduation, independent of the timing of score releases. This would honor students who have put in the effort and completed their coursework under the program's demands.
We call upon the Collier County School District to acknowledge the achievements of the AP Capstone graduates by allowing us to wear our stoles at graduation. This is a small but significant gesture that reassures students of the value of their hard work and dedication and aligns with the educational goals of preparing students towards college readiness.
Let's ensure fairness and recognition for all future AP Capstone scholars in Collier County. Your signature can make a difference. Please sign this petition to support our cause.
