Allow all VCUSD seniors to decorate graduation cap and gowns

Allow all VCUSD seniors to decorate graduation cap and gowns
The Issue
Growing up in Vallejo, I've always been inspired by the city’s commitment to diversity and self-expression. Being allowed to showcase our individuality is a cherished part of our tradition. I vividly remember watching my siblings, who graduated here in Vallejo, proudly walk across the stage with their caps and gowns adorned in a way that celebrated their unique identities. Their decorated attire was not just a reflection of their achievements, but also a canvas showcasing pieces of their personalities.
Now, as I stand on the brink of my own graduation, I dream of celebrating this milestone in a similar fashion. I yearn for the opportunity to add personal touches to my cap and gown, to visually express who I am and to hold my head high as I join the generations of graduates before me. This rite of expression is more than an artistic endeavor; it is a statement of our individual and collective identity.
Unfortunately, recent restrictions within the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) have put an end to this tradition. The limitation stifles our creativity, diminishes our celebration, and suppresses our right to express ourselves in such a pivotal moment of our lives.
Studies have shown that allowing students to express themselves, such as through personalized cap and gown decorations, boosts their confidence and strengthens their sense of belonging (SOURCE: Scholarly articles on student self-expression). Furthermore, self-expression is crucial in nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment, aligning with the values that VCUSD has historically championed.
We propose a change in the policy to allow seniors to decorate their graduation attire. This modification acknowledges the importance of individual expression and cultural representation among students. Schools across the country have successfully implemented guidelines ensuring that decorations are respectful and appropriate, and VCUSD can do the same.
Join me in urging VCUSD to honor its commitment to diversity by reinstating this important tradition. Let us unite to support the right of every senior to express their unique identity during one of the most significant events of their lives. Sign this petition and advocate for a change that celebrates both individuality and community spirit.
