The Issue

Graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone that represents years of hard work, perseverance, and personal growth. For many families, walking across the stage is not just symbolic—it marks the culmination of long nights of studying, overcoming obstacles, and achieving dreams. Unfortunately, in Pasco County, not all seniors are guaranteed the opportunity to have this pivotal experience. We, the parents, students, and community members of Pasco County, are united in our request for a fair and inclusive opportunity for all graduating seniors to participate in their graduation ceremony walk.

Currently, certain criteria prevent some students from participating in the graduation ceremony, such as minor disciplinary issues or unpaid school fees. These restrictions unfairly penalize students who have met academic requirements but fall short in other less-significant areas. Every student who has worked hard to graduate deserves to be celebrated among their peers.

Research shows that participation in graduation ceremonies boosts students' self-esteem and acts as a motivational factor for continuing education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students who partake in graduation ceremonies are more likely to pursue higher education pathways.

We propose that Pasco County School Board revises its current policy to allow all seniors who meet academic criteria the privilege of walking at graduation. Alternative measures, such as community service options to address outstanding fees or counseling for disciplinary matters, can be implemented to ensure that these students are not unjustly excluded from their graduation ceremony.

The implementation of this inclusive policy will demonstrate to our youth that our educational system values every individual's achievements and personal growth. By signing this petition, you are advocating for an equitable solution that honors the hard work and dedication of all Pasco County seniors. Please join us in supporting this meaningful change.
