Allow All Dogs, Including "Problematic" Dogs, Access to Newton Dog Parks

The Issue

My dog was a rescue from a shelter and his previous life was horrific, leaving him with fear and anxiety. The best place for socializing or training a dog is at a dog park. Now that my dog has been labeled "problematic," he is banned from utilizing these parks. Taking a dog with issues and saying no more socializing is a HUGE mistake and can make the problem worse. The current city ordinance says if your dog is fence reactive they can be labeled the same I was told I was one of 16 dogs labeled so far this month.

Dog parks are essential for the mental health and well-being of all dogs, especially those who have had traumatic pasts. Socialization in controlled environments helps reduce anxiety and behavioral issues over time. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), proper socialization can significantly improve a dog's behavior.

Please help us change this policy so that all dogs in Newton, Iowa—including those deemed "problematic"—can benefit from our local dog parks. Sign this petition to support inclusive access for every canine companion!
