The Issue

Living in a region where the weather can often be harsh and unpredictable, I am deeply concerned about the current policy at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (AGGS) which does not allow students to wear or carry coats in classrooms and throughout the school day. I believe this policy needs to be re-evaluated for the comfort, health, and well-being of all students.

Many students, myself included, have experienced the discomfort and cold that comes with moving across the campus between buildings, especially when there is a chilly breeze or an unexpected downpour. The school uniform, while functional, does not provide adequate protection against the frosty winter days or sudden rain showers that are common in our area. Not everyone owns or prefers to carry an umbrella, and depending solely on them isn't a feasible solution for many.

Scientific research has shown that being exposed to cold environments for prolonged periods can lead to various health issues, including weakened immune response and increased susceptibility to colds and other illnesses. Allowing students to carry their coats would create a more comfortable and less distracting environment where everyone can focus better on their studies and excel academically.

This change is both simple and practical. By amending this rule, AGGS would demonstrate their commitment to prioritizing the welfare of their students, ensuring that everyone has the tools to keep warm and dry as they navigate their school day. Let us work together for this cause — significant improvements often start with small but meaningful changes.

Sign the petition to urge AGGS administration to allow students to wear and carry their coats during school hours.
