The Issue

Two years ago, we were on the brink of creating a Club America (powered by Turning Point USA)chapter at Chiles High School in Tallahassee, FL. We had everything lined up: eager students and a committed teacher sponsor ready to bring this engaging opportunity to our campus. However, our aspirations were abruptly halted when the upper administration declared that a 'political' club could not exist on school premises. This decision not only dampened our spirit but also stands in contrast to federal statute. Student political clubs at Florida high schools are not governed by a specific Florida state statute but are instead protected by the federal Equal Access Act of 1984. This applies to any public high school that receives federal funding and allows non-curricular student clubs to meet on school grounds during non-instructional time. This right prevents schools from discriminating against student-initiated clubs based on their political, religious, or philosophical viewpoints.

Club America powered by Turning Point USA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk. The organization’s mission is to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. Establishing a chapter at Chiles High School would provide students with a platform to engage in healthy political discourse, develop leadership skills, and build a community based on shared values. It's crucial to understand that educational environments should nurture diverse thoughts and ideas, not suppress them.

Federal statute encourages student-led organizations that foster a spectrum of viewpoints, aligning with the First Amendment. By preventing us from forming this chapter, Chiles High School's administration is limiting our ability to express our beliefs, an act that undermines both our educational and personal development.

Allowing a Club America chapter on campus would not only comply with federal statute but also provide students with an opportunity to actively engage in civic discussions and community-building exercises. This platform would serve as a crucial space for those interested in discussing the values that shape our nation.

We urge Chiles High School's administration to revisit their decision and permit the establishment of this chapter. This is not just about forming a club; it’s about promoting intellectual diversity and empowering students to explore their interests and nurture their potential. Stand with us in ensuring our school is a place where free speech and diverse opinions thrive.

Sign this petition to help us bring a Club America chapter to Chiles High School and uphold our rights to free expression.
