Allow 6th Graders to Choose Seating Arrangements at Lunchtime

The Issue

As parents of sixth-grade students, we understand the challenges our children face. They juggle academic responsibilities, after-school activities, and social life, with no time in between. Their schedules are jam-packed, and the limited downtime they get is equally crucial to their development and mental well-being. One such downtime is the lunch period – a time that should allow them to bond with friends of their choice and relax. Unfortunately, our kids are restricted to sit with their team members only, which further limits this valuable social interaction time. Free seat Friday is often taken away as a punishment and eating outside has been limited due to the weather.

Research shows the importance of socialization in pre-teens, having a positive influence on their cognitive, emotional, and social well-being. By allowing our kids to sit with the friends they choose to during lunch, we would be promoting not just their happiness, but also their overall development.

We ask the administration to reconsider the current system and allow sixth graders the freedom to choose who they sit with at lunchtime, everyday. It's time to prioritize their social needs along with their academic ones. If small groups of 6th graders are not behaving appropriately, their behavior should be addressed individually, not as an entire grade. Please sign this petition to incite a change that could significantly benefit our children.

A similar petition is being passed around the 6th grade, looking for signatures and support from the students.
