The Issue

At the beginning of my tenth-grade year at Oak Ridge High School in Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), I was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to apply to the National Honor Society (NHS). However, to my disappointment, I discovered that the district does not allow 10th graders to apply, despite the fact that the national organization permits such applications, and this practice is common in schools across the United States.

The NHS is an esteemed organization that recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Joining NHS has long been a goal of mine, not only as a mark of academic achievement but as a platform to further serve my community and develop essential leadership skills. Unfortunately, the OCPS district's policy is preventing me and countless other students from seizing this valuable opportunity at a crucial time in our academic journeys.

This exclusion sends a disheartening message to students eager to excel and actively contribute to their communities. It hinders our ability to start building a compelling resumé for college applications, which often consider involvement in organizations like NHS as a significant factor in admissions decisions. The earlier we can embark on developing these pivotal skills and gaining experience through a reputable organization, the better prepared we will be for future challenges.

According to the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which oversees NHS, allowing 10th graders to join aligns with the organization's guidelines and contributes to a well-rounded educational experience. Nationwide, numerous school districts successfully incorporate 10th graders, fostering a nurturing environment where students thrive through early engagement.

This petition calls upon OCPS to review and revise its current policy. By doing so, the district would align itself with the national standards and grant eager students, like myself, the chance to join NHS from the 10th grade. This change would enrich our learning experiences, allow us to become more active members in our communities, and help us grow both academically and personally.

I implore OCPS to reconsider its policy and allow 10th graders to apply for NHS, fostering a culture of inclusion and opportunity for all high-achieving students. Please sign this petition to help us bring about this necessary change.
