The Issue

Livingston, a rapidly growing community in Calgary, is home to a diverse population that includes many Muslim families and individuals who lack a dedicated space for worship and community gatherings. The absence of a mosque in Livingston forces residents to travel considerable distances to practice their faith and participate in communal activities. This petition calls for the allocation of land to develop a mosque in Livingston, providing a vital resource for the spiritual and social needs of the Muslim community.

Currently, the Muslim population in Calgary is among the fastest-growing religious groups in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the Muslim community in Calgary increased by over 50% between 2001 and 2021. This growth trajectory underscores the urgent need for additional religious and community facilities to accommodate the expanding population while promoting diversity and cultural understanding.

A centrally located mosque in Livingston would serve not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for educational programs, charitable activities, and inter-faith dialogues, strengthening community bonds and fostering inclusivity. The provision of such a facility would enhance the quality of life for thousands of families, encouraging cultural exchange while ensuring that religious practices can be performed in a dignified and respectful setting.

We propose that the City of Calgary, in collaboration with community leaders and stakeholders, identify and allocate an appropriate piece of land for this purpose. This initiative would demonstrate the city's commitment to supporting all residents' cultural and religious rights and ensuring equitable access to necessary facilities.

We urge the Calgary City Council and the local government to prioritize this request and begin the process of land allocation immediately. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of many families, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious community. Please sign this petition to make this vision reality, ensuring that everyone in Livingston has access to the resources they need to feel connected, supported, and respected in their community.
