Stop the Demolition of Henry's 18th Century Public House.

The Issue

The landmark building currently housing Henry's dates back to the 1720's and as such it stands as one of the last remaining historical buildings in Workington town centre. The building has so far survived decades of often misguided restructuring and redevelopment carried out by successive councils which has resulted in the destruction of many of the most prominent buildings of historical significance within the town over past decades.

I won't write a comprehensive list of the short-sighted and incoherent destruction that has been levelled against the towns key historic buildings over the years though I will mention the most egregious. Curwen Hall which currently stands as ruined disused shell just a short walk away from the building now earmarked for demolition is still a source of contention for many of the towns residents. To this day the destruction of the hall is something the council has failed to address or explain in any meaningful way whatsoever. In the eyes of many it stands only as a monument to the short-sighted and philistine approach Allerdale Council has adopted for decades in regards to the town of Workington.

We must ask ourselves why are Allerdale Council are looking to demolish one of the towns scarce historical buildings simply to make it easier for heavy goods vehicles to turn a corner? Many other town councils are petitioning for funds to build bypasses in order to stop the flow of heavy goods vehicles going through residential and commercial areas. Do they really have such little respect for the people of Workington?

To summarise I feel that the destruction of a much loved and historically significant building in order to possibly make it easier for heavy goods vehicles to turn a corner in the middle of town is at best an ill-conceived idea very much against what is in the interests and the hearts of the towns residents, please lend your support if you feel the same way by adding your signature to the petition.
