For Masset Municipality to acknowledge unceded & traditional territory of the Haida Nation

WHEREAS it is well known that Haida have lived on this archipelago for more than 13 000 years;

WHEREAS the Haida Nation strives for full independence, sovereignty and self-sufficiency, as per the mandate of the Council of the Haida Nation

WHEREAS across Canada and BC, it is recognized that a first step in reconciliation is an acknowledgement of the unceded and traditional territories of the Indigenous peoples in which an institution does work, people gather, and/or etc.

BE IT RESOLVED that all official communication of the Masset Municipality include an acknowledgement that the municipality is on the unceded traditional territory of the Haida nation.

As per the BC Community Charter for municipalities (http://www.bclaws.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/03026_04 there is no need to collect signatures but just full name and residential address of each petitioner as per this excerpt below:
“Petitions to council 82 (1) A petition to a council is deemed to be presented to council when it is filed with the corporate officer. (2) A petition to a council must include the full name and residential address of each petitioner.”
