The language of the state of Odisha is Odia. Most people, especially those who are not educated much, can read only Odia. That includes drivers of buses, trucks and other vehicles.

It is imperative, therefore, that the milestones on National Highway that runs through the state, are written in Odia.

Of late, it has come to our notice that milestones are being written in English and Hindi, as compared to earlier practice of using English and Odia. We have nothing against English or Hindi. But they cannot come at the cost of Odia, as it causes major inconvenience to local people.

We urge the Union Minister for Road Transport, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Ministers of State, Road Transport, Shri P Radhakrishnan and Shri Mansukh Mandaviya  and the Chairman, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Shri Yudhvir Singh Malik to take necessary steps on a priority basis, to ensure that the milestones on NHAI in Odisha are all written in Odia.
