Everybody has been personally impacted by Covid-19. This year has been especially tough for students. Classes are remote and with guidelines, there is not much to do safely. At the University of Michigan, freshmen are currently being hit the worst. They are residing in the dorms and have had a difficult time living on campus. Michigan is handling Covid-19 unlike most other schools. Many other universities are testing students weekly which has reduced the spread of the virus. On the other hand, Michigan is not doing much to protect its students and instead, not really addressing the virus. There are inefficient testing plans and especially at the beginning, little to no information about how Covid-19 will impact this semester. Therefore, there have been many cases and the transmission rate is high. This is not due to students directly violating the rules; it is because of how the situation is being handled. The school went on a 2 week lockdown which was one of the first steps addressed by the University to reduce the spread of the virus. After this action being successful, the school announced freshmen will not be able to live in dorms next semester. Instead of giving up and closing the school down, the University should handle the situation better. All other Big Ten schools are doing a sufficient job and a school like Michigan should too. It is not fair for freshmen to have their first year of college taken because of the University's lack of action. The University should take responsibility and work through a way to fix the problem they created. Simply trying to avoid the situation is not the solution.
