The Issue

By signing this petition, I agree that LAUSD needs to increase and expand Psychiatric Social Workers (PSW) positions and programs in order to meet the high demand for school mental health and school social work services in all LAUSD schools.

Who is Impacted? Based upon current high rates of mental health and crisis report data, the need for school mental health services has reached a critical level.  Everyday, more students and families are seeking assistance to cope with trauma and socio-emotional, mental health challenges, yet the resources available in schools are stretched too thin or nonexistent. Currently, the distribution of PSWs does not meet the high demands, with many schools having insufficient or a lack of services.

What is at stake? Research studies have shown that without school mental health services, students struggling with mental health issues have difficulties concentrating, engaging in school, relating to others, regulating their emotions, socially isolating, addressing bullying and discrimination, and reducing suicide/self-injury risks, leading to poor attendance, low academic achievement, and school behavioral problems.   Statistics show that when students receive adequate mental health services, they achieve better academic results and develop healthier social relationships. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, early mental health support can lead to improved long-term educational and social outcomes. Without PSWs, LAUSD schools cannot fully provide the necessary interventions that shape the future of our children.

Why is now the time to act? To address this growing demand, I am calling for the increase of centrally district funded LAUSD PSW positions and programs. The following are the growth and changes that we need:

  • 1 School-Based PSWs to 400 students. Campuses that house multiple schools should have the student population counted collectively towards this ratio.
  • 1 Clinic-Based PSWs for every 5 School-Based PSW. Clinic-Based PSWs will have a caseload of 1 Clinic-Based PSW to 20 students and 1 PSW Program Facilitator for every 5 Clinic- Based PSWs.
  • ERICS (Educational-Related Intervention & Counseling Services) PSWs will have a caseload of 1 ERICS PSW to 25 students.
  • PSWs assigned as Mental Health Consultants (MHC) will be assigned as 1 MHC for every 20 schools.
  • 1 Crisis Counseling and Support PSWs to 20 PSWs.

By expanding the PSW positions and programs, LAUSD will be investing in a brighter future for our students, ensuring they have the tools and support to thrive emotionally, mentally, socially, and academically. LAUSD families deserve a school support system that prioritizes mental health for our children. Let us take this crucial step towards change and make a difference in our students’ lives.

This is a CALL TO ACTION for LAUSD Superintendent and Board Members to increase and expand centrally funded PSW positions and programs throughout LAUSD to meet the needs of all students in all LAUSD schools now! Please sign this petition to make a lasting impact on LAUSD schools NOW!
