The Issue

As a teacher, a mother, and a concerned citizen, I'm deeply disturbed to see children being exposed to explicit content under the guise of education. This exposure has significant ramifications on their growing minds, their understanding of the world, and their overall cognitive development. Such explicit literature is prevalent in our schools and local public libraries, easily accessible to children. There have been numerous incidents demonstrating its harmful impact on our young ones, and it's our time to act.

For example, the book, “Sex Is a Funny Word” by Cory Silverberg which is designed as a sex education book for children, typically recommended for ages 7–10 per reading levels. It covers topics like nude bodies, many socially engineered genders, and sexual relationships. It also challenges the idea of wearing clothes, thereby encouraging nudity.

Similarly, the book, “Both Can Be True” by Jules Machias which is recommended for grades 3 -7 creates confusion about a child gender which can cause gender dysphoria.

A report published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology highlights the powerful influence media content has on children's development of sexual schemas and expectations (Coyne, S.M., 2019).

Another study conducted by the American Psychological Association stated that early exposure to explicit content contributes negatively to self-esteem and mental health. In the spirit of protecting our children, we demand that these explicit materials be promptly removed from the children's sections in our schools and public libraries.

We urge our local community leaders, the school board, and the library authorities to establish firm regulations over the selection of books kept in the children's section. Discussions about intimate subjects should be guided under the supervision of a trusted adult in a responsible, sensitive, and age-appropriate manner. This essential action will help to safeguard the innocence and wellbeing of our kids.

Please sign this petition to uphold the moral responsibility we hold towards the young minds of our society.
