Increasing Number of Tricycle Vehicles in Cabanatuan City Causing Pollution

The Issue

Cabanatuan City is known as the “Tricycle Capital of the Philippines. It’s high time Cabanatuan authorities address this issue before it further worsens and results to fatal disaster.

Our city is experiencing warmer climate and mostly it is caused by the tricycle vehicles. Most of the tricycles are emitting smoke that is causing air pollution that adds up to the warmer climate in our city. It is most likely to affect the health of the passengers and the bystanders near the road.

Aside from traffic here in our city, each tricycle vehicles emit VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Under sunlight, VOCs react with nitrogen oxides emitted mainly from vehicles, power plants and industrial activities to form ozone, which in turn helps the formation of fine particulates. The accumulation of ozone, fine particulates and other gaseous pollutants results in smog that reduces visibility

Whenever the weather is hot, VOCs are more likely to be present in the air we breathe, and therefore more dangerous to human health. Not all VOC are known to be toxic, however in some cases there are clear negative effects, depending on the compound, the length and intensity of the exposure. Formaldehyde, diesel exhaust, styrene, benzene and perchloroethylene are known or suspected carcinogens, and heavy traffic, smoking and various types of workplace exposure can pose serious health riks.
