All Grantham vets form an alliance to provide 24 hours emergency cover in the town.

The Issue

For any pet owner, there is no deeper fear than facing a pet emergency and being unable to get care due to lack of accessibility. This is a harsh reality the people of Grantham are having to face as a result of unavailable timely veterinary service in our hometown.

Imagine the distress of your beloved pet incurring an injury or falling ill after your vet’s have closed for the night, and not having any nearby vet clinic open to provide the necessary help. The thought is unbearable, yet it is a heartbreaking fact that vet clinics in Grantham currently do not provide 24-hour emergency out-of-hours services in the town. This forces pet owners to undertake long drives of 40 minutes or more to reach the nearest available emergency clinic, which adds to the distress of the pet and the owner.  Some people have even lost pets on those journeys that could have survived if there had been access locally.

We firmly believe that our pets deserve better, and so do all pets and their owners throughout the UK.  According to the PDSA PAW Report of 2024, 51% of UK adults own a pet and this out of hours situation is spreading throughout the UK. We believe that nobody should have to gamble with their pet's health due to a lack of 24-hour veterinary services.  Some people are choosing not to get more pets due to this situation and therefore the vets are unwittingly doing themselves out of business.

We propose a solution: we’re asking the vets in Grantham to set an example for the country and come together and adhere to a rotation mechanism that will ensure 24-hour out-of-hours service. This rotational mechanism implies taking it in turns to cover out-of-hours services.

Never should any pet owner suffer the loss and grief some have endured. By signing this petition, you can play an instrumental role in implementing 24-hour emergency veterinary care in Grantham and beyond.  It's healthcare for our pets, and it’s time we made it a priority. Sign this petition and let our voices be heard.
