I deeply care about the development and retention of softball players in Little League. I also believe in making the game of softball affordable and accessible to anyone that wants to play and Little Leagues provides that opportunity. But, I believe that the Little League age cut-off rule currently in place is not beneficial to most. As an active member of the Little League community, I recognize the significant growth and development that happens for these young players, especially between 11-14 years old.

In the current system, the age cut-off of December 31st creates a distinct disadvantage for most players born between September and December. These players often find themselves in an uphill battle when competing with players born earlier in the year, especially at the older divisions. This uneven playfield is not conducive to the healthy growth and skill development of these players.

We urge Little League International to adjust the age cut-off, beginning with the 2026 season, to match that of other National Softball Programs, the league age of the player for the 2026 season would be determined by the players actual age on August 31, 2025. This change will allow players born late in the year to compete with their peer group and it will be another step to close the gap between middle school and high school competition, thus promoting, even more so, for players to play Little League Softball Juniors to continue developing their skills for a High School team. 

By making this change, Little League International can help to ensure they are retaining players and providing an inclusive, fair, and developmental platform for all players, regardless of when they are born. Allowing players to further develop before moving up in age will improve play, aid in social development and improve the experience for many players.
