Align Home/End Key Default Behavior on macOS with Modern Editing Norms

Align Home/End Key Default Behavior on macOS with Modern Editing Norms
The Issue
To: Apple Inc., macOS Development Team
We, the undersigned, respectfully ask Apple to modernize the system-wide function of the Home and End keys in the next version of macOS: make them move the cursor to the start and end of the current line by default, in line with industry standards on Windows and Linux.
Why This Matters
- Industry Standard: Windows and Linux platforms use Home/End for line navigation. This is the expected and most productive behavior for millions of people moving between operating systems every day, especially professionals in programming, writing, and data work.
- User Frustration: Online communities are filled with confusion, complaints, and detailed guides on how to hack macOS just to restore this basic behavior. Countless Stack Overflow, Reddit, Apple Discussion, and blog threads show this persistent pain point affects both newcomers and longtime users.
- Productivity Impact: For anyone editing code, emails, or documents, jumping to the start/end of a line is a far more frequent and ergonomic task than jumping to the very start or end of a document. The current macOS approach increases cognitive friction and slows down daily tasks.
- Patchwork Solutions: While workarounds (such as DefaultKeyBinding.dict, Karabiner, or app-specific remaps) exist, they require technical skill, risk breakage across OS updates, and do not always work system-wide, leading to frustration and fragmentation.
- Community Consensus: The voices asking for this update are clear and global: Home/End line navigation improves user happiness and matches established muscle memory for fast, precise editing in all forms of text coding and content.
- Majority Will Not Be Affected: Most Apple laptops, Magic Keyboards, and compact models do not have dedicated Home or End keys at all—these keys only appear on full-size and third-party keyboards. That means less technical and casual users—who make up the vast majority—will never notice the change, as they already rely on modifier shortcuts or don’t use these keys.
Why Now
- Modernization Consistent with Apple Policy: Apple’s recent moves—retiring Intel CPUs, dropping 32-bit support, and prioritizing forward-looking updates—demonstrate the company’s readiness to evolve the platform for the greater good, even at the cost of some legacy compatibility.
- Bridging the Gap: Adopting this industry standard would end decades of cross-platform friction for technical and professional users, while causing minimal disruption elsewhere.
Our Request
- Change the Default: Make Home move to start of line, End to end of line—matching global expectations for productive editing.
- Support Legacy Preferences: Offer a simple toggle in system settings (or clear documentation for power users) to restore the legacy behavior for those who want it.
Apple’s legacy is progress and user focus, not rigidity. This modern, low-impact change helps millions of professionals and eliminates one of the most frequently cited productivity barriers for Mac users—while the vast majority of customers will never notice a difference.
It’s time to bring macOS in line with global productivity standards—help creators, coders, and everyday professionals work faster and more comfortably on the world’s best platform.
