Open an investigation into the human trafficking ring exposed by the journalist, Tobore Ovuorie.
The Issue
Mohammed Abubakar,
Inspector General of Police,
Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dear Sir:
On the 22nd of January 2014, ZAM Chronicle, Amsterdam and Premium Times published a report by a journalist, Tobore Ovuorie, on her undercover work to expose the human trafficking mafia in Nigeria.
It is a horrifying report, involving allegations of human trafficking and murder. Fortunately, Ms. Ovuorie escaped with her life to tell the story, which is available online.
We would like- as concerned and outraged citizens- to ask the Nigerian police to investigate this matter and arrest those responsible. This should not be difficult to do as Ms. Ovuorie seems to know many geographic details of the places where she was taken to and where she witnessed horrific crimes. She knows the names of the ring leaders. She even provides the name of a policeman. She writes in her report:
“It is on the windy Sunday evening of October 6 that I make my first contact with the outer ring of this mafia. A big party with VIPs is on the cards...The party is held at a gorgeous residence along the Aguiyi Ironsi Way in Maitama, Abuja...
when I am taken with a group of girls to be trained in pickpocketing...we ‘practice’ under the guard of two army officers, a policeman as well as a number of male ‘trainers’. The policeman doesn’t even bother to cover his name badge: Babatunde Ajala…"
In the interest of justice, we demand an immediate and thorough investigation into this nefarious ring. The women killed were someone’s daughters; someone’s sisters; fellow Nigerian citizens. The women trafficked are someone’s daughters; someone’s sisters; fellow Nigerian citizens. It is the obligation of the Nigerian police to protect Nigerian citizens. We appeal to you therefore, to make sure that this does not get swept under the carpet.
Thank you.
