Alexis Parkes Community Garden

The issue

This petition has been started for Alexis Parkes, her family members & for our community.

Alexis's life was tragically taken by a man Alexis welcomed into her housing commission home to stop him from being homeless, his name is James Mason, he poured fuel around underneath her wooden home & set alight to it after locking Alexis Parkes inside. Michael, a neighbour, tried to save Alexis, he spoke to her at the window where Alexis told him, her partner, James Mason, had locked her in there, unfortunately, Michael was unable to get Alexis out, Alexis was pulled out by fire fighters & cpr was performed & after a while a slight pulse was found however she died days later after her organs started to shut down due to the injuries she sustained from the fire. It's been a long journey for justice for her family & all involved. My partner Michael was main witness in the trail & other residents from the community also had to go in as witnesses. Now that there has been some justice & Alexis Parkes death date was this February, we would like to ask for the land to be turned into Alexis Parkes Community Garden. I have contacted a few people on behalf of her family, my partner & myself regarding this (housing commission, state parliament, Minister Enoch, even Annastacia Palaszczuk after seeing her advertisement for a community garden grant) all unsuccessful, now we are turning to the community to ask for support. Alexis Parkes was & always will be so much more then a statistic or a news story, she was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, an aunty, she was a human who deserves to be remembered for the life she had, spreading joy, making people laugh, she loved her gardening & her family & she loved helping whoever she could, which is what took her life away. Please, show your support by signing & sharing this, this can help Alexis be remembered for something more then how she left this world, it can help bring some healing to not just her family or my partner & myself but also to this community, to the other residents who witnessed just as much as I did, who smelt what my partner & I smelt, please help a community start to heal as well as all her loved ones which include her friends within the community. This also has the potential to save lives, if a victim can know Alexis Parkes story & hopefully leave the abuser before it's too late then the family feels like they have done their job with getting this garden going. Please help us continue being an even louder voice for Alexis in leaving a legacy behind in her name. This is also for all other victims of DV, the victims that parliament/government remember & the victims that they forget or have forgotten. If this is successful we will plant a flower for every life that is taken as a result of domestic violence.

Thank you for your support.
