The Issue

I understand what it feels like for others to be trapped in a home where shouting is constant, where there’s no privacy, and where speaking up could make everything worse. Too many of us can’t reach counsellors because phone calls aren’t a safe option—and that’s not okay.

Mental health struggles don’t follow office hours. Yet many people in South Africa who desperately need help are blocked by limited access to support services. Phone lines and counselling centres often operate only during the day, leaving those suffering in silence at night with nowhere to turn.

According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), nearly one in three South Africans experience a mental health condition during their lifetime. Yet only a fraction receive proper support. For many, reaching out is dangerous or impossible—especially if they live in environments where privacy is scarce and abuse or neglect is present.

We are losing lives and breaking spirits because support is locked behind “office hours” and phone lines. Mental health isn’t a 9–5 problem. If help isn’t available when people need it most—especially those who are scared or silenced—then what’s the point?

We humbly ask for 24/7 counselling lines that allow text-based support, like WhatsApp, which is safe, silent, and accessible to anyone at any time. This is not a want; this is a basic need.

Every moment without proper support pushes someone closer to giving up. The system is failing us. We need to change now—not tomorrow, not next year. Open 24/7 text-based counselling services. Give the voiceless a voice through their fingertips. Stand with me and demand a system that listens when and how we need it.

For “the silent cries shall be heard,” and “the oppressed shall find rest.” We must be the light in the darkness for those who sit in shadow. No longer shall the broken be forsaken, nor their tears go unseen. Just as “a bruised reed shall not be broken,” let us lift up the weary with timely help and compassion.

Help me raise awareness for those who have their own stories to share but keep them hidden behind locked doors.
