Urge Belmont Feed & Seed (Chicago) to Stop Selling Live Animals

The Issue

In this dangerous time of Coronavirus, it is simply unsafe to handle and sell animals.  Chicago's Belmont Feed & Seed's website states that they sell baby chicks and can special order baby ducks, baby geese, baby turkeys, and more.

"Live baby poultry can carry Salmonella, which are harmful germs. Contact with live poultry – like chicks, chickens, ducklings, ducks, geese and turkeys – can be a source of human Salmonella infections. Between 1990-2014, there were 53 reported outbreaks of human Salmonella infections linked to live poultry in the United States."  https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/COMMUNICABLEDISEASE/Pages/FS-Baby-birds-and-Salmonella.aspx

In addition to the health concerns, live animals are sentient beings and should be protected, not profited from.  They shouldn't be sold like material goods, as there are many people out there with ill intent or who don't know how to properly care for animals and who are unwilling to care for them when they are no longer babies.  This store also promotes pigeon racing, which also poses a danger with the mass breeding and handling of pigeons and of course, the intense confinement is incredibly inhumane.

Belmont Feed & Seed sells plenty of products to care for animals.  There is no need to sell living beings as well.

Alderwoman Sanchez and Mayor Lightfoot, please help protect the health of Chicagoans and the welfare of animals by ensuring that businesses in your ward and the City don't sell animals.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
