Alaska has the highest SNAP payment error rate in the country — over 23%. Under a sweeping new federal law signed by President Trump, that means Alaska could eventually be required to cover 15% of all SNAP benefit costs paid to residents. That's a bill that could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

When states face that kind of cost, they have hard choices: cut other public services to fund SNAP, narrow who qualifies, or drop out of the program entirely. A recent national survey found that more than a quarter of states are already considering cutting eligibility — and four states said they may withdraw from SNAP altogether.

Alaska cannot be one of those states.

Tens of thousands of Alaskans — including families, seniors, people with disabilities, and residents of rural communities where groceries are already expensive — depend on SNAP to buy food each month. Cutting eligibility or withdrawing from the program would push some of the most vulnerable people in this state deeper into food insecurity.

Alaska's leaders have a choice. The state has until at least 2029 before cost-sharing kicks in — time to reduce payment errors, protect the program, and avoid punishing residents for an administrative problem they had no hand in creating.

We are calling on Governor Mike Dunleavy and the Alaska State Legislature to make three public commitments: Alaska will not withdraw from SNAP. Alaska will not narrow SNAP eligibility criteria. And Alaska will invest in fixing its payment error rate so that residents are protected long-term.
