Queer Island is located in the Kodiak Island Borough in Alaska, USA. Its name derives from a translation of the Russian name, Ostrov Chudnoy, but a quick search shows that the name actually translates to 'Wonderful Island'. While 'queer' is a word with varying definitions and is being reclaimed by the LGBT community to take away its power as a slur, it does not seem like an appropriate name for such a location, especially in a time of renewed thoughtfulness about the language we use. I propose that we do not stray from the original name, but simply update it with a more accurate translation. 'Isle of Wonder' is a much more fitting and appropriate title for such a location and I hope you agree.
