Access to clean drinking water for Indigenous peoples in Manitoba

Access to clean drinking water for Indigenous peoples in Manitoba
The Issue
In Canada, there are still several communities that do not have access to safe, clean drinking water - predominantly Indigenous communities. In 2015, Justin Trudeau made the promise that if elected, him and his party would end boil-water advisories throughout First Nations in 5 years. However, it is clear that this was an empty promise. The Trudeau government has been in power for six years, but yet there are still several Indigenous communities that have severely restricted access to safe and clean drinking water. To date, there are still 44 long-term water advisories in effect across Canada - three of these being situated in Manitoba. Tataskweyak Cree Nation, located in Northern Manitoba, has been under a drinking water advisory since 2017 - this is simply unnaceptable. It is crucial that Canadians work in solidarity with Indigenous communities to pressure both provincial and federal governments to deliver on their promises. If the issues of access to clean drinking water are not solved, Indigenous people will continue to face risks of sickness and the relationship between the government and Indigenous peoples will be harmed. Canadians all over should be concerned for the wellbeing and basic human rights of Indigenous people within Canada. Please sign this petition to hold the government accountable to their promises!
