Alameda Planning Board / Alameda City Council: Responsible Development of the Gateway Parcel to Alameda's West End

Dear Fellow Alamedans,

The West End of Alameda is on the brink of a renaissance. The new Alameda Landing project is less than a year from completion. After years in limbo, Alameda Point has finally been conveyed from the Navy back to our community. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to reshape the West End into an even more vibrant, exciting community, and to present the West End as a jewel of the greater Bay Area.

The Gateway parcel located between the corners of Webster Street, Willie Stargell Avenue, and Mariner Square Loop, is the initial entry point to the West End of Alameda. Due to its visibility, it is imperative that the City carefully review and evaluate all proposed uses that will welcome residents and visitors alike to this side of the Island for many years to come.

We are seeking your support for the Keep Alameda Special petition. The petition requests that the Alameda Planning Board reject various use applications that are currently under review for this gateway location. Main points include:

(1) Gateway to the West End: The proposed uses do not send the visual message that Alameda is a unique and special place;
(2) Impact of traffic congestion and lack of site access; and
(3) Safety concerns for pedestrians.

We acknowledge that Alamedans are excited about In N Out coming to Alameda, but this parcel is not the right location for that. This is our community’s opportunity to create a gateway to Alameda that is attractive to potential residents, investors, and visitors, and showcases our city as a unique place to visit and live.

Thank you for your support. Please pass on word to other Alamedans who will support this issue. We also encourage you to contact the Planning Board and City Council to voice your concerns.
