Rename Bibb Graves Hall on the campus of Alabama A&M University
The Issue
Founded in 1875, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is a Historical Black University (HBCU) located in Normal, AL. On its campus sits a building named after a former Alabama governor, Bibb Graves, who was also a well known member and Grand Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan. As an alumnus of AAMU, I find it unacceptable to have a memorial to a person who once stood in firm opposition to the very education our students seek sit atop our beloved hill. Bibb Graves Hall must be renamed to reflect the strong heritage and mission of our fine institution. Ideally, the new name should be chosen through the input and consensus of current attendees and alumni. Ultimately, that decision lies with the Board of Trustees. However, this petition is an effort to encourage them to do so immediately.
