Charge officer Anthony Holzhauer with murder in the first degree for the death of Janisha Fonville .
The Issue
Janisha Fonville was loved by many and her life was taken by a CMPD officer in Charlotte, NC without warning or justification. CMPD officers are prohibited from using any force above what's necessary in the performance of their duties and will then do so only in accordance with CMPD procedures and the law. Officer Anthony Holzhauer is guilty of murder in the first degree for his actions applying the use of deadly force against his victim. There are rules of engagement prior to applying the use of deadly force; the first option is not to shoot first and access the situation later. The officer has been involved in two other shootings with an additional fatality while in the line of duty. The public grants the police considerable authority to act on its behalf in the effort to create an environment as free of crime, the fear of crime, drug abuse, violence and disorder as possible. It’s time to demilitarize the law enforcement and put in place better policies aimed at strengthening the communities these officers operate in. There is a lack of transparency and too often law enforcement aren’t being held accountable, nor is justice being serve for lives lost at the hands of the police. Police officers are taking the law into their own hands and deciding the verdict of a case; guilty, sentenced to death. You have an officer saying the victim lunged at the officers and several witnesses stating otherwise. A thorough investigation needs to take place followed by a fair hearing and charges being brought against the officer. Whatever happened to the changes promised after the mike brown case; cameras on police officers, a special prosecution unit investigating police cases? It’s time to take a stand and hold them to the same standards they are sworn under oath to protect and uphold.
